"NO one is going to be arrested here." Emma's mother spoke, in defiance of her father." 

"What are you talking about, woman?" Her father asked furiously. 

"I said no one is going to get arrested. We are already seeing how we can solve this thing amicably." She was firm. 

"So, this is how you want it?" He was very angry. "That is why I don't like working with you. We had already arranged to let the police handle this. Now, you have come and done something else. Anyway, she is your daughter. Handle the case the way you want to handle it. However, be warned that I never want to involve myself in this issue again."

"What do you mean by that?" Mama Emma asked her husband. 

"I mean what I mean." He answered rudely. Then, he turned to me. "Mr. Eyong, I have taken my hands off this issue. In fact, as far as I am concerned, Emma is now your wife. Enjoy your free woman." 

He turned around and stomped away accompanied by the policemen he had brought. After he had gone, the attention was once more on me. 

"Now, are you going to sign the undertaking or not?" My boss asked. 

"I will sign." I answered, all the time avoiding Emma's gaze. 

I was handed the paper and I signed it. I was also asked to kneel down in front of Emma's mother and beg her to let things lie the way they were without any further escalation.
